Overview

What is .media

.media comes from the English word media: the means of communication and their forms, image, sound and text. It speaks to anyone who makes or publishes content: a production studio, an advertising agency, a news site or an independent creator. It was added to the internet’s root in 2014, and IANA’s record names Binky Moon, LLC as the body responsible for it.

The extension says your field before your name, so it suits a production company, or a large company’s media section that gathers its photos and press releases in one place. It supports names in Arabic and DNSSEC signing.

We have an offer for its first year, and renewal costs more; work out the following years’ cost before you register. As a new extension it is less familiar than .com to some people, and some mail filters are more cautious with new extensions.

Who it suits

For your field: is .media the best fit?

Every field has an extension that says something about it. Here is what .media says in each, and which extension completes it.

  • A video production studio

    Excellent · The first choice

It says at first sight that you make image and sound, and gathers your work and reels under one name.

    Register it with.media.com

  • A marketing and ad agency

    Good · A good fit

It suits an agency that makes campaigns and content; .marketing says more if your work is marketing before production.

    Register it with.media.marketing

  • A news site in Iraq

Good · A good fit with .com

.media says you’re a media outlet bringing readers in Iraq their country’s news; add .com for those who type it out of habit.

    Register it with.media.com

  • A creator or podcast

    Good · A good fit

An address that gathers your episodes and channels in one place you own, away from the platforms’ shifts.

    Register it with.media.me

  • A company’s press room

Good · A good fit with .com

Your site on .com, and your photos and press releases on .media under the same company name.

    Register it with.com.media

  • An online store

    Consider another · Consider .store

Buyers look for a store, not a media outlet; .store and .com are clearer to them.

    Register it with.store.com

Before you register

  1. 1Register .tv if video is your core work.tv names the screen exactly, and .media stays for the whole outlet.
  2. 2Register your outlet’s name in Arabic too.media takes names in Arabic letters, so register your outlet’s name as your readers in Iraq write it.
  3. 3A short name, read as it’s writtenIf it needs spelling out on the phone, it’s too long or too complicated.
  4. 4No digits or hyphens that need explainingEvery hyphen or digit has to be said, and what has to be said gets forgotten.
  5. 5Renew automatically, or register for yearsUp to 10 years at once, so you never miss a date.
  6. 6Make sure the name isn’t someone else’s trademarkA registered trademark’s owner can recover the name from whoever registered it first.

  • Yes, once 60 days have passed since it was registered or last transferred. Ask your current provider for the transfer (EPP) code and open a transfer request with us; a full year is added to the domain’s term.

  • We remind you by email 31 days and 8 days before expiry, and 3 days after it. After expiry the website and email stop, and you can renew in the first eight days at the regular renewal price; from day 10 it may go to auction. If it is deleted and the registry allows redemption within 30 days, the redemption fee is $200 plus a year’s renewal.
