Overview
What is .pro
.pro entered the internet’s root in 2002, and its name is short for professional. Its meaning speaks to people with professions and expertise: an engineering or accounting office, a clinic, a consultant, a freelance designer; anyone who offers their expertise and wants an address that says so clearly.
Its manager in the IANA record is Identity Digital Limited, and it supports DNSSEC signing and names in Arabic. Its first year with us is an offer, and the price rises at renewal; it is three letters, said as “dot pro,” that people understand with no explaining at all.
But it is less widespread than .com, and many of your customers will type .com out of habit if they forget your extension. So it serves you better when you find a short name for your profession in it that you couldn’t find in .com, or as a personal professional address beside your company’s site.

Who it suits
For your field: is .pro the best fit?
Every field has an extension that says something about it. Here is what .pro says in each, and which extension completes it.

Whoever sells their expertise wants an address that says it, and .pro says “professional” in three letters next to your name.

An engineering or accounting office

A clinic or health practitioner
Good · A good fit
A serious professional address for a doctor or therapist, though .clinic says “clinic” more clearly.

Good · A good fit
Present your work with a professional’s seriousness, and add .art for your portfolio.
Register it with.pro.art
A company or brand
Consider another · Consider .com
A company selling products needs an address everyone knows; .pro says “expert,” not “brand.”
Register it with.com.co
An online store
Consider another · Consider .store
.pro says “professional service,” while buyers look for a store they can trust.

In the internet’s root since 2002, so it isn’t a passing fad.
And where its value shows
On the office sign
Three letters read with your name from afar.

On your freelance platform profile
A link leading the client to your work and expertise.
