Overview

What is .com

.com was born with the internet’s first extensions in 1985; its c stands for commercial. The first name registered in it was symbolics.com, and ever since it has been the extension every other one is measured against.

.com asks for no documents and no conditions: anyone, person or company, from any country, can register it for any purpose. It is the most registered extension in the world today, run by Verisign under a contract with ICANN.

Because it is the oldest and the most widespread, its short, common words were taken years ago; the question when you register it isn’t whether you trust it, but whether you can find the name you want.

Who it suits

For your field: is .com the best fit?

Every field has an extension that says something about it. Here is what .com says in each, and which extension completes it.

  • A company or brand

The first thing a customer types when they know your company’s name, and the one they trust most on a business card, an invoice or an ad.

    Register it with.com.shop

  • A blog or personal site

    Good · A good fit

Your name in .com stays with you wherever you go; if it’s taken, .me is a friendly personal alternative.

  • Your brand protected
