Overview
What is .tokyo
.tokyo names the city of Tokyo in Japan by its English name. It entered the internet’s root in 2014 and is run by GMO Registry, Inc.; it supports DNSSEC signing, but it doesn’t accept names in Arabic letters. It is the only extension in our list that names a particular city.
For a customer in Oman it only fits a real tie to Tokyo or Japan: an Arab restaurant or shop in Tokyo, a Japanese language school, a travel office for trips to Japan, or the blog of an expat living there. At sufra-shuwa.tokyo, visitors know this is a table serving shuwa in Tokyo.
With us its price is fixed for the first year and every renewal, and lower than most of our extensions. But a foreign city’s name confuses a customer in Oman who doesn’t know your tie to it, so if you have no tie to Japan, .com is clearer to your customers.

Tips
Before you register
- 1Don’t register it without a tie to JapanOtherwise the name promises your customer something they won’t find.
- 2Put .com beside it if you’re hereA Japanese language school in Sohar needs .com for its students and .tokyo for its idea.
- 3A short name, read as it’s writtenIf it needs spelling out on the phone, it’s too long or too complicated.
- 4No digits or hyphens that need explainingEvery hyphen or digit has to be said, and what has to be said gets forgotten.
- 5Renew automatically, or register for yearsUp to 10 years at once, so you never miss a date.
- 6Make sure the name isn’t someone else’s trademarkA registered trademark’s owner can recover the name from whoever registered it first.
