Overview

What is .xyz

.xyz entered the internet’s root in 2014, and its name is the last three letters of the Latin alphabet. It carries no business, professional or geographic meaning, and that is what lets it fit any project: a startup, an app, a personal site, or an experiment that hasn’t taken shape yet.

.xyz asks for no documents and no conditions, and it supports names in Arabic and DNSSEC signing. Because it is newer than the classic extensions, short words that were registered in .com years ago are still free here, so you find your name as you want it, with no digits or hyphens.

But the first-year offer doesn’t last: renewal costs much more, so count the cost of the years ahead before you register. Some people don’t know it yet, and some mail filters are stricter with cheap new extensions, so don’t make it your only email address for a business that relies on trust.

Who it suits

For your field: is .xyz the best fit?

Every field has an extension that says something about it. Here is what .xyz says in each, and which extension completes it.

  • An experiment or side project

    Excellent · The first choice

A short, free name at a low first-year cost, to test your idea before you invest in a pricier name.

    Register it with.xyz.com

  • A tech startup

    Good · A good fit

You find the short name someone else took in .com here; with .io your tech image is complete.

    Register it with.xyz.io

  • A web tool or app

    Good · A good fit

A short name typed into the browser quickly, leaving the tool’s name to say what it does.

    Register it with.xyz.app

  • A personal site or portfolio

    Good · A good fit

Your name as short as you want it, in a neutral extension that doesn’t tie you to one profession.

    Register it with.xyz.me

  • An online store

    Consider another · Consider .com

Buyers hesitate at an extension they don’t know on a checkout page; .com or .store reassures them more.

    Register it with.com.store

  • A local business in Qatar

    Consider another · Consider .com

It tells your nearby customer nothing about you; .com is what they type out of habit, and your city’s name before it says you’re close by.

    Register it with.com.online

Before you register

  1. 1Count the renewal before the offerWhat you pay every year after the first is what matters.
  2. 2Let the name say what you doThe extension says nothing about your field, so let the name say it.
  3. 3A short name, read as it’s writtenIf it needs spelling out on the phone, it’s too long or too complicated.
  4. 4No digits or hyphens that need explainingEvery hyphen or digit has to be said, and what has to be said gets forgotten.
  5. 5Renew automatically, or register for yearsUp to 10 years at once, so you never miss a date.
  6. 6Make sure the name isn’t someone else’s trademarkA registered trademark’s owner can recover the name from whoever registered it first.

After expiry the website and email stop, and you can renew in the first eight days at the regular renewal price; from day 10 it may go to auction.
