Overview

What is .co

.co entered the internet’s root in 1991 as Colombia’s extension, and its manager in the IANA record is Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies (MinTIC), Colombia’s communications ministry. Since 3 October 2025 the CentralNic registry, of the Team Internet group, has run it on the ministry’s behalf, presenting it as short for company or corporation.

.co doesn’t require you to be in Colombia: anyone, person or company, from any country, can register it, with no documents. That is why entrepreneurs and startups choose it when they want a short name read as “company.” It supports DNSSEC signing, but it has no table for Arabic letters in IANA’s records.

What you should know: its price with us is higher than .com, though fixed every year, and a registration in it runs from one year to five, not ten. And whoever forgets your extension may type .com out of habit, so some of your email and visitors reach the name’s owner there.

Who it suits

For your field: is .co the best fit?

Every field has an extension that says something about it. Here is what .co says in each, and which extension completes it.

  • A startup

    Excellent · A strong choice

Two letters investors and customers read as “company”; a short name is easier to find in it than in .com; add .io for a tech product.

    Register it with.co.io

  • A company or brand

Good · A good fit with .com

It says “company” in two letters; but whoever forgets your extension types .com, so register that too if you find it free.

    Register it with.co.com

  • A short campaign link

    Good · A good fit

Two letters after the dot leave room for your campaign’s word, so the link stays short on the ad and the post.

    Register it with.co.link

  • A local business in Saudi Arabia

Good · A good fit with .com

.co says “company” in two letters, but your customer in Saudi Arabia types .com out of habit; register both.

    Register it with.co.com

  • An association or initiative

    Consider another · Consider .org

.co reads as “company,” while donors and volunteers trust .org; add .community for an initiative that brings people together.

    Register it with.org.community

  • A blog or personal site

    Consider another · Consider .me

Your personal site doesn’t need to say “company”; .me says it’s yours, and .blog that it’s a blog.

    Register it with.me.blog

Tips

Before you register

  1. 1Write .co clearly in your adsOnly one letter separates it from .com, so write it clearly and say it as “dot co.”
  2. 2A name that works in Arabic and EnglishPick a name before .co that’s easy to read and say in both languages, so your customer in Saudi Arabia writes it as they heard it.
  3. 3A short name, read as it’s writtenIf it needs spelling out on the phone, it’s too long or too complicated.
  4. 4No digits or hyphens that need explainingEvery hyphen or digit has to be said, and what has to be said gets forgotten.
  5. 5Renew automatically, or register for yearsUp to 5 years at once, so you never miss a date.
  6. 6Make sure the name isn’t someone else’s trademarkA registered trademark’s owner can recover the name from whoever registered it first.
