Overview

What is .in

.in entered the internet’s root in 1989 as India’s extension, and its manager in the IANA record is National Internet Exchange of India. It is open to anyone, person or company, from any country, so you don’t need to live in India to register it, and it tells whoever reads it there that your business speaks to their market.

But it has two conditions to know before you register: the registrar collects identity verification data, as India’s rules require, and no service hiding the holder’s data is allowed in it, so whoever registers a name through a proxy isn’t recognized as its owner. That is why it suits those who don’t mind being known by name and want to be seen in India.

.in supports DNSSEC signing, but a name in it is Latin letters, digits and hyphens only, so no names in Arabic. Its price with us is lower than .com and fixed every year. But if you have no customers or partners in India, it says nothing to your customer, and .com or .co is closer to them.

Who it suits

For your field: is .in the best fit?

Every field has an extension that says something about it. Here is what .in says in each, and which extension completes it.

  • A company with Indian customers

    Excellent · The first choice

Your Indian customer knows their country’s extension and trusts it; add .com for the rest of the world.

    Register it with.in.com

  • A software team for India

    Good · A good fit

The extension says where your work and partners are; .io is broader if your product is for the whole world.

    Register it with.in.io

  • A student or community association in India

Good · A good fit with .org

For a student or community association there, .in says where you are, and .org that you’re a non-profit.

    Register it with.in.org

  • A brand addressing the world

    Consider another · Consider .com

India’s extension says “this is India” to everyone who reads it, and a brand speaking to all needs .com.

    Register it with.com.co

  • A local business in the UAE

    Consider another · Consider .com

Your customers are in the UAE, not in India, and they know .com and type it out of habit.

    Register it with.com.shop

  • A blog or personal site

    Consider another · Consider .me

.in says nothing about you if you’re not in India, and doesn’t allow hiding your data; .me is closer to you.

    Register it with.me.blog

What it does for you

What you gain when you register it

  • Says “India” in two letters

Your customer there knows from the extension that you speak to their own market.

  • Open from any country

You need no residence or company in India to register it.

  • Email for your customers there

sales@baharat-dubai.in is an address telling the Indian buyer you’re speaking to them.

  • A real holder, not a proxy

It’s registered in its real holder’s name, not a proxy’s, so no one else is recognized as owner.

And where its value shows

Writing to Indian buyers

An address saying you know their market.

On your product catalog

A link leading Indian buyers to their page.

At trade fairs

Two letters Indian visitors understand at once.

In targeted ads

A link matching the market you address.

Tips

Before you register

  1. 1Have your identity details ready before registeringThe registrar asks to verify them, so write your name and address as on your document.
