Overview
What is .in
.in entered the internet’s root in 1989 as India’s extension, and its manager in the IANA record is National Internet Exchange of India. It is open to anyone, person or company, from any country, so you don’t need to live in India to register it, and it tells whoever reads it there that your business speaks to their market.
But it has two conditions to know before you register: the registrar collects identity verification data, as India’s rules require, and no service hiding the holder’s data is allowed in it, so whoever registers a name through a proxy isn’t recognized as its owner. That is why it suits those who don’t mind being known by name and want to be seen in India.
.in supports DNSSEC signing, but a name in it is Latin letters, digits and hyphens only, so no names in Arabic. Its price with us is lower than .com and fixed every year. But if you have no customers or partners in India, it says nothing to your customer, and .com or .co is closer to them.

Tips
Before you register
- 1Have your identity details ready before registeringThe registrar asks to verify them, so write your name and address as on your document.
- 2.in for India, .com for the worldOne site under two names, so Indian buyers find you by their country’s extension and others by .com.
- 3A short name, read as it’s writtenIf it needs spelling out on the phone, it’s too long or too complicated.
- 4No digits or hyphens that need explainingEvery hyphen or digit has to be said, and what has to be said gets forgotten.
- 5Renew automatically, or register for yearsUp to 10 years at once, so you never miss a date.
- 6Make sure the name isn’t someone else’s trademarkA registered trademark’s owner can recover the name from whoever registered it first.
