Overview

What is .tv

.tv entered the internet’s root in 1996 as the extension of Tuvalu, the island nation in the Pacific, and its manager in the IANA record is Ministry of Transport, Energy, Communications and Innovations in its government. Because the two letters are read everywhere as short for television, its operator, GoDaddy Registry, presents it as the extension for video, streaming and everything watchable.

.tv doesn’t require you to be in Tuvalu: anyone, person or company, from any country, can register it, with no documents. It suits channels, content creators, production companies and streaming platforms, and anyone who wants an address that says “watch” before it’s clicked. It supports DNSSEC signing, but it has no table for Arabic letters in IANA’s records.

What you should know: its price with us is higher than .com, though fixed every year, and its short, common words were taken long ago. And what it says about video makes it narrower than .com: a company that doesn’t produce video content, or a store, gains nothing from its meaning.

Who it suits

For your field: is .tv the best fit?

Every field has an extension that says something about it. Here is what .tv says in each, and which extension completes it.

Two letters that say “watch” before the link opens; add .com for those who forget the extension.

    Register it with.tv.com

  • A video production company

    Good · A good fit

An address saying your work is picture and sound; add .media for the news and work you publish.

    Register it with.tv.me

  • A channel or show in Lebanon

    Good · A good fit

Two letters your viewers in Lebanon and around the world understand; add .show for a program with a name of its own.

    Register it with.tv.show

  • A company or brand

    Consider another · Consider .com

If video isn’t your work, .tv’s meaning adds nothing to your company, and everyone knows .com.

    Register it with.com.co

  • An online store

    Consider another · Consider .store

Buyers look for a store they can trust, and .store or .shop says “store,” not “channel.”

Tips

Before you register

  1. 1The same channel name on every platformGive .tv the name you use on video platforms, so viewers find you by the same name wherever they search.
  2. 2A name that works on airPick a name before .tv that’s understood when said in Arabic at the end of an episode, with no need to spell it out.
  3. 3A short name, read as it’s writtenIf it needs spelling out on the phone, it’s too long or too complicated.
  4. 4No digits or hyphens that need explainingEvery hyphen or digit has to be said, and what has to be said gets forgotten.
  5. 5Renew automatically, or register for yearsUp to 10 years at once, so you never miss a date.
  6. 6Make sure the name isn’t someone else’s trademarkA registered trademark’s owner can recover the name from whoever registered it first.
