Overview

What is .city

The word city means a town or a city. .city entered the internet’s root in 2014 and is run by Binky Moon, LLC. It belongs to no particular city, so the name before it makes its meaning: abudhabi.city, sharjah.city or alain.city; visitors read the city’s name, then know the site is about it.

.city suits city guides and news sites, residents’ initiatives, and anyone gathering a city’s restaurants, craftspeople and events in one place. It also works for a local business that wants to say its city is part of its name, like a tourist office, or a transport company working within the city.

With us the first year comes with an offer, and the renewal costs clearly more. An address carrying a city’s name may suggest it’s the city’s official site, so write on your first page who you are. And since .city doesn’t name the country, say on your page that your city is in the UAE, as some city names are shared by more than one country.

Tips

Before you register

  1. 1Spell the city as its people doal or el? With a hyphen or without? Pick the commonest, and register the other to redirect to it.
  2. 2Say who you are on your first pageSo visitors don’t take it for an official site, write who runs it and why.
  3. 3A short name, read as it’s writtenIf it needs spelling out on the phone, it’s too long or too complicated.
  4. 4No digits or hyphens that need explainingEvery hyphen or digit has to be said, and what has to be said gets forgotten.
  5. 5Renew automatically, or register for yearsUp to 10 years at once, so you never miss a date.
  6. 6Make sure the name isn’t someone else’s trademarkA registered trademark’s owner can recover the name from whoever registered it first.
